One small step


It was the 26th December 2015 that I was to discover what so many others already know... the benefits of going walking. The three months leading up to this time were very difficult for me on a personal level. I decided that I would go for a walk which I now call my 'walk, prayer and ponder' time. Very quickly I noticed benefits including:

  1. My ability to walk further than I thought possible.
  2. My fitness level increasing and weight decreasing.
  3. My medical reports improved significantly.
  4. An ability to think through challenges and decisions that were upon me with far greater thought and accuracy of the outcome.
  5. A sense of a greater connection with God.
  6. A heightened awareness of the beauty of nature and the feeling of breathing fresh clean air.
  7. Walking had become enjoyable and life giving.

One of the focusses for me as I continue to work with those in grief and also in studying for my research doctorate, is to try and find those 'things' that are common for most people as they learn to navigate and ultimately flourish through their grief journey.

Without question the issue of exercise and 'fresh air' presents itself again and again. 

How does one get from feeling unable to get out of bed, to being able to walk around the block, to going on a 5km beach or bush walk? Well, the cliche is true, one small step at a time.

I want to really encourage those who are reading this who are struggling to get started, to try and do something today you have not done as yet. Perhaps it is to walk to the letter box, or the clothesline, maybe around the block or to the second big tree down the track near your house. Whatever you decide, you can do it.

I would also encourage you to consider taking a friend with you, have some music playing, buy a pair of good walking shoes or a nice top to help you feel ready and expectant of your new achievement.

Your one small step could be the beginning of a new and healthier you in every way. Set a day and time, and give it your best shot. I am convinced you will be glad you did.
